Offered is this magnificent and unique snooker table of huge historical significance and importance to the game and sport of billiards and snooker.
A billiard/snooker table owned by two world champions who were the early forefathers of the game.
The table is an elegant full size Thurstons table. Thurstons are the oldest billiards/snooker table manufacturer in the world, dating back to 1799. Thurstons have been awarded many Royal warrants for their services to royalty. This beautiful table is made from rosewood, with a lovely golden satin grain running through it, and inlaid with satinwood cross banding all around the table and legs. The table displays the Thurstons manufacturing plaque, which has royal warrants and states ‘By appointment to HM King Edward VII’. The table also has a fabulous matching rosewood and inlaid scoreboard, which on its own is a very desirable and sought after piece. It has bevelled mirrored doors, which open to reveal a slate chalk board, life pool game scoring, a built in ball storage compartment and drum turn snooker scoring.
The table was made to order in 1911 from Thurstons, and was purchased by the current international billiards champion at that time John Roberts Junior. John Roberts Junior and his father John Roberts Senior were the first national and international billiards professionals, and became the first world champions of the game. They were the forefathers of the sport of snooker which we have today. They travelled the world playing professional billiards and made the game popular throughout the world. After the death of John Roberts Junior in 1919, the table was then supplied to several owners before it found its way into the hands of the best known professional snooker champion and snooker legend, record breaking 15 times world champion Joe Davis OBE. After winning 15 consecutive world championship titles he held the title for an astonishing 20 straight years unbeaten. He also made the first recognised 147 break in 1955, and was made an OBE in 1963. Joe Davis helped to organise the first snooker world championship in 1927 and is considered the man who has helped made snooker the sport it is today. Snooker is now main stream with televised world championships and tournaments.
One of the most special and important features of the table is an original plaque that Joe Davis had commissioned and fitted. The plaque proudly displays his name, and states that the table had been fitted with his own Joe Davis ‘Champion’ Cushions. It also displays his business address of the billiard company he started in London and operated after eventually retiring from professional snooker.
After the death of Joe Davis in 1978 the table became one of the pride and joys of a very well known and multi talented much loved British celebrity who owned it for over 30 years.
This superb and stunning billiards/snooker table, with its unique provenance is of huge unparalleled significance and importance to the history of the game of billiards and the sport of snooker. It quite possibly should belong in a museum of billiards/snooker and sporting memorabilia, however it is also a beautiful piece of antique furniture and would impress and be a great asset in any home anywhere in the world to be enjoyed and used.
As mentioned the table is supplied with an impressive provenance including a copy of the original sales ledger/receipt, addressed to John Roberts Junior in 1911 (verified by Thurstons). Also included is a framed photograph with Joe Davis standing by the table in his billiard room at his family home, and the original Sothebys sales catalogue for the sale of the snooker table after the death of Joe Davis in 1979. The front cover showing the snooker table in Joe Daviss snooker room at his home. Finally, included in the sale are some other supporting articles and documentation highlighting the history as described above. Further details available on request.
The table is currently dismantled and either ready for collection, or ready to be shipped internationally.
